It's Veg Box Day!

I love every other Friday, when I get a Vegetable box from a north-western farm organisation. I never know what its going to consist of, so its exciting to have a look and work out how I am going to use all the vegetables.

For a few weeks earlier in the year we did get an awful lot of beetroot. There is a limit to the amount of beetroot salad two people can eat! Today we got Jerusalem artichokes, which I am not too sure what to do with, but a helpful label on the bag suggested I could roast them. So that is what I will do. We get beautiful cauliflowers, tight and pure creamy white, and ginormous savoy cabbage! Lovely carrots, parsnips and leeks, too.

So now I get out my recipe books and try and sort out what goes with what, and how I can use these delicious look vegetables.

A very domestic post, this!

I hope your digestive system copes better with Jerusalem artichokes than mine does...

We eat a lot of vegies out of our garden. Never had any artichokes or never tasted them. Are they nice?

Marja, Jerusalem artichokes are aggressive plants. Put them in a barrel if you try them. I've only eaten them raw.

Gilly, nice to hear about all those wonderful veggies. Parsnips and Savoy cabbage are rare around here. My favorite way to cook parsnips is to peel, slice and simmer one in just a little water, adding 3 or 4 carrots after a few minutes. Cook until the parsnip is mushy and the carrots are just tender. When the water has evaporated, add a little butter, salt and pepper, stir and serve.

Jerusalem artichokes. Beloved of pheasants, they'll travel miles to hide in them.
But not alas yours, they have to be growing in the ground!

I had no problems with a very small artichoke last night! Will try them in a salad, in small bits!

I love the idea of a box of veg - we have a scheme like that here for organic veg and I keep meaning to subscribe only I'm not sure if I can request not to have peppers when they re in season...can't stand them!! otherwise I think it's a wonderful idea

Peppers do not agree with me either. That cauliflower looked lovely. I am determined that we are going to have a vegetable garden this year so that we can grow our own vegetables.
